Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring is in the air again, and when this season comes around, it is always time to get a good house cleaning out of the way. This task is a dreaded chore for many people, and often there are not many volunteers around who want to help out. Don't worry, this spring cleaning checklist will get you set and prepared on your way to achieving a spotless home while everyone around you gets to take part in your spring cleaning project. With a bit of planning, you can even get professionals to help you as well!

Pre-Plan

Make sure that you have all of the tools necessary as well as cleaning supplies stocked up beforehand. You can even start planning this a few months out during the winter so that you are fully prepared for your upcoming spring cleaning project. Consider buying must-have cleaning supplies such as:

All-Purpose cleaner
Glass cleaner
Heavy-duty cleaners
Kitchen cleaners (stove, ovens, appliances, floors, furniture, countertops)
Bathroom-specific cleaners
Baking soda
Vinegar
Bleach
Mild dishwashing detergent
Cleaning Supplies you may want to include:
Broom and mop
Squeegee
Lots of clean towels and rags
Sponges
Cleaning brushes
Buckets
Knee pads for kneeling and cleaning on floors
Reuseable spray bottle
Rubber gloves
Vacuum
Carpet, tile, grout cleaner
Rotary shampoo machine
Hot water extraction machine

Every-Room Checklist

Here is a checklist, and you can apply it to every room. It is good to start cleaning from top to bottom, starting with ceilings, ceiling fans, ceiling trimming, walls, and window trimming.
  • Wipe down all doors, trimming, door ceilings, walls, and wash down all baseboards
  • Clean and remove all dirt from vents
  • Clean all window treatments (blinds, curtains, drapes)
  • Remove all dirt and dust from windows and window sills
  • Replace any old or burnt-out light bulbs and make sure all overhead lights are dusted and shined
  • All lampshades and light fixtures should be vacuumed or dusted so that all dust and dirt is removed
  • Since grout stains easily and is highly porous, you can protect it by applying a penetrating grout sealer with a small foam brush
  • All bookshelves and shelving should be dusted. It would be best if you started by removing everything off of the shelves and then using a feather duster, rag, furniture cleaner, and crevice tool on a vacuum to get into the hard-to-reach places. Take a soft clean towel to wipe any dust off of books
  • Make sure that your home is removed from all dust. The best way to do this is by vacuuming all dust that settles on the floor
  • Disinfect all computer keyboards and accessories such as the mouse. Use a mini vacuum or compressed air 2 remove dirt, dust, food crumbs, and other particles, especially around keyboards and desk crevices. Use a damp microfiber cloth or disinfectant microfiber cloth to wipe any computer equipment down
  • Put all of your winter items such as clothes or decorations in storage
  • Sweep the front porch and back deck or patio
  • Ensure that all of your electronics are plugged in correctly and that you do not have any electrical hazards such as tangled cords or exposed wiring. Zip tie any loose cables and make sure everything is plugged into a power source that provides surge protection.

Kitchen
  • Clean out all cabinets and drawers
  • Clean out pantry or anywhere food is stored
  • Apply oven deep-cleaner and clean it thoroughly
  • Move out the refrigerator - clean all dirt and dust behind it
  • Vacuum dust on refrigerator coils
  • Clean out the fridge entirely and deep clean
  • Clean the outside of the refrigerator and door shelving/trimming

Living Room
  • Dust and polish all furniture and fixtures
  • Vacuum all upholstery, lampshades, hard-to-reach-places, and carpets
  • Shampoo carpets or mop and wax floors if needed
  • Wipe down, dust, and wash and decorative items like picture frames, mirrors, fixtures, etc
  • Steam wash and throw pillows or blankets

Bedroom
  • All bedding should be thoroughly washed
  • Flip the bed mattress or rotate it if you are using a pillow top
  • Wash all pillows
  • Get rid of unwanted items that are stored in bedroom closets and under the bed

Don't Forget Fire Safety and Security

Spring cleaning is an excellent time to do a fire safety inspection of your home, and this includes changing the batteries in your smoke detectors. It would be best if you changed your batteries every six months. In addition, it is essential to check your fire extinguisher and ensure that everyone in your home knows how to use it in the event of a fire. Addressing fire safety in your home is also the perfect time to review emergency escape plans and check any security features that you have installed in the home.
